EV Tuesdays: Week 38

EV Tuesdays: Week 38
2nd August 2022

Hello EV Tuesday readers,

How are we all? Are you having a good week so far? We have been busy here at EV Cables sourcing some excellent tools, tips, videos and podcasts for you to look at. We also have a fantastic event that is going on in Yorkshire!

Now is the time to take a quick break from whatever you are doing, pick up a drink and sit down for 10 minutes to go through the links we have chosen this week.

As usual we will be posting these on our social media channels including Facebook, Reddit (check out r/evcables subreddit) & Twitter, head over and give us a follow, like or an upvote. If it is an extra item you would like, sign up to our blog right here.

Until next time, happy reading!

1. EV APP of the Week: Better Route Planner

Joe Baguley has said "The absolute best app for route planning in an EV is 'A Better Route Planner'. Put ABRP into your app store, or find it in your browser at www.abetterrouteplanner.com. You can choose your start and end state of charge, pick multiple stops and loads of other options - it also has every EV out there in it. I use it all the time."

2. EV Event: Eventbrite

Yorkshire EV Club is showcasing and demonstrating the popularity of EVs at the Rotherham Show. Come for a family friendly day out and chat to real owners about their electric vehicles (EVs). Normally, car parking would be around £3-6, however if you agree to exhibit your car for the whole day, the parking is free! Come for a debate, come for a chat!

3. EV Tip: Explore the whole range of available charging options

An EV is similar to the average car: it’s inactive for around 20 hours every day. Utilise the vehicle’s downtime and charge it whenever and wherever you can access power – whether at a fast-charging point or public charging point while you’re out shopping or at the gym, while you work or via a wall-mounted unit outside your home overnight.

Here’s a breakdown of the four main types of charging options available and how quickly they can charge your EV:

Type of charger Power Output Speed (vehicle dependant) Locations
Ultra-Rapid DC 100kW + Up to 100 miles in 10 minutes Selected Forecourt Services
Rapid DC 50kW Up to 33miles in 10 minutes Motorway Services
Fast 7kW Up to 5 miles in 10 minutes Home Workplace & Destination
Slow Up to 3Kw Up to 2 miles in 10 minutes

Home Workplace & Destination

4. EV Review: Tyre Review

In this video it looks at the differences between a regular road tyre, and a tyre designed specifically for EVs, comparing them in safety tests such as braking, range tests and internal noise levels in the vehicle.

5. EV Charge: Charge Place Scotland

ChargePlace Scotland is Scotland’s national Electric Vehicle (EV) charging network. We’re owned and have been developed by the Scottish Government, and funded in partnership through a public grant from Local Authorities and other organisations. We’re aiming to make owning an EV accessible for all Scottish driver by installing charge points across Scotland – from Shetland to the Scottish borders.

6. EV Conversion: You Tube

Artur Kustusch Just over two years ago I started converting my 1998 Jaguar XJR. I picked Lexus GS450H powertrain and BMW PHEV battery modules. Total of 48kWh (24x2kWh 8S modules) in two banks, one in the engine bay and one in the trunk (in place of old fuel tank). I am powering motors with stock Lexus GS450H inverter controlled by EVBMW VCU v2. Charger is 3.3kW 1st GEN Volt as well as DC/DC converted. Tesla Model S AC compressor, Volvo S40 EPS for power steering and Bosch iBooster for brake assist. It has been my daily driver for almost two years during which I put little over 10k miles. I keep tinkering and improving and planning bunch of upgrades in the future.
I love driving the car, every day more actually 🙂

Until next time. Have a fantastic week!
